LOCAL MEDIA RELEASE
Robert McClelland MP is pleased to announce that three schools in his electorate of Barton will receive over $76,000 under the latest round of the Gillard Government’s National Solar Schools Program.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Mark Dreyfus, recently announced that 784 schools Australia wide have been awarded grants of up to $50,000, to install solar and other renewable power systems, rainwater tanks and to implement a range of energy efficiency measures.
“The National Solar Schools Program gives school children the opportunity to see energy generation and learn the importance of water and energy conservation first hand, to date 3,800 schools across Australia have been awarded grants under the program,” Mr Dreyfus said.
Mr McClelland said, “Kingsgrove High, St George School and Bexley Public will be taking practical action to reduce carbon emissions whilst saving water, conserving and generating electricity.
“It is great to see that in this round of the National Solar Schools Program more than 263 schools across NSW have been funded,” he said.
“The combined installation of renewable energy systems will generate approximately 20MW of solar power – equivalent to powering around 4,200 average households each day,” Mr Dreyfus said.
Applications were assessed using merit-based criteria, meaning schools have to demonstrate value for money, as well as environmental and educational benefits.
Applications from schools located in remote or low socio-economic areas received additional weighting to allow funding to be directed to schools most in need.
The National Solar Schools Program is another example of the Gillard Government’s investment in renewable energy to ensure a clean energy future for Australia.
“The Government’s Clean Energy Future plan provides significant levels of financial support for innovation in renewable energy and other low-pollution technologies,” Mr McClelland said.
The final round of the program will open to applications on 13 February, 2012.
